CHALKBOARD x TYLER BAUM @ Gallery Twenty-Two

This past Saturday, I went to Gallery Twenty Two on Central Ave for a art show. My homie "Chalkboard" aka Derek Ingram teamed up with Tyler Baum to show their new works dubbed "Simple Art for Simple People". The exhibit will be up through March 6th -March 28th, so go by and check it out. I roll to the show with my two slightly tipsy cousins, Alan and Sterling aka Havoc and Mayhem. The two of them were on their best behavior, so no problems on this go around. The only problem I had, was when a was approached by some girl that worked at the gallery while taking photos.

I was taking photos of Chalkboard's work, and she asks me "Are you media or you taking photos for yourself?" I give her a quick look (still taking photos), and say "I guess myself to answer your question." The about to pissed lady, tells me that she wants me to stop the artist will not like that, because their work can be duplicated and the rest I didn't hear. I told her that Derek is a homie, he's actually sitting right there behind me. I continue to tell her I was not told, nor are there any signs up to state that. I also say, "You can feel free to ask him, he is sitting right her behind me." Well, she goes over to Derek to tell him something in his ear. Mr. Chalkboard has a surprised look on his face as if he was caught off guard, like what is going on. As I look on, she looks to see if I'm watching her say whatever in Derek's ears. She gives me a mean ass look like get out of our conversation and walks off behind the bar. Derek give me the okay to keep shooting, Dread-1..Mean Lady-0..keep it moving. I also ran into the Dirt Squad and Spawns Of Gnar crew with beers in hand, some in both hands. Here are some of the art shots.
























I did not get to shoot Tyler's art, because of what happened earlier. Plus, someone was touching his art, and the bouncer blanked..I didn't want beef..so I bounced. Next door, Snug Harbor had live music going down. I bumped into some Plaza-Midwood heads I haven't seen a while, and chalked it up for a minute. I did not stay long, so I headed with the cousins down to Camden to Apostrophe. Sterling is headed back to Miami, so the three of us were hanging out one more time together.





I know..I know..yes, that is an 8 Ball jacket. I kind of kept my distance from the guy rocking the vintage leather coat. The guy looked real shifty anyways, Sterling said he was holding something. He did look like he just got out of jail though. All in all it was good night. Congrats to Derek on the show, I'll be waiting on you to see what you got up your sleeve homie.

SAC -TOWN

Oh wait, you didn't know that your Boy listens to the Deftones. I have been a fan since 95' when they debuted. You know the whole Northern Cali, Skate, Blah blah blah. I'm still pissed I never got the dunks they dropped. I could never get my hands on them (sigh). Chino is my dude..I like that dudes voice. I will scooping up the new album that drops a little after My Birthday.

The Vision

It is something very true about every artist has a type of vision. For us as skateboarders we also have that vision. I'm always distracted when I drive down the street and see the "possibilities" of something good. It almost reminds me of a dog when it sees a bird or a squirrel. It even happens when a woman walks by with a nice ass, and you have no choice but to react. Well, maybe those two examples are not even close to what the "vision" is. I know for me riding through downtown or anywhere for that matter, is it crazy when it comes seeing things that look skate-able. In one glance, I look at the handrail itself, is it round, square, height, and length. I haven't skated a handrail since 93' anyways, so it would might be a little rough. It's everywhere, blank canvases all around us in this world waiting for a mark. It may be stairs, a manual pad, a curb, a bike rack, a gap, an incline, whatever it may be. I don't even skate much anymore, and I still notice without even trying. You can ask Jason Waters if anyone has even tried to "Step Hop" or "No-Comply" the planter at CVS on Central Ave. Jason saw me try, he told me "damn that's a good idea, never thought of that." We are skating at the same spot and are vision are even different.

It even goes back to the individual and their art form and his own interpretation.
I mean we skate on architecture which is basically art and science, the same came be said in skateboarding. It's not a sport no matter what the X-games, Mountain Dew, and the Maloof Cup say. Jason Dill said in Transworld's "Anthology" video, skateboarding is art. The science of the ollie and tre flips..that's science. I remember this commercial on the DC website years ago when they had this campaign. I think Devine is on riding for Etnies anyways, they both(DC)are mall kicks to me anyways. Just a thought while spring is coming around, and my board is ready for some action. I most likely went of subject and it might not even be grammatically correct. You can take your red pen and mark all you want. It is my blog..bite me.

Seasons Change

I didn't mind the Fall/Winter season this year because, it was mild to say the less. The weather was cool, because in Maryland shit was crazy. I was doing something I haven't done in a long time when it comes to wearing my footwear. I have been only wearing a few shoes this season, sometimes even for days at a time. That whole wearing shoes a few times and never wearing them again is an issue with me. It's an issue than I choose not to deal with right now. I wear shoes until they break in then I don't wear them for a period of time. The shoes I skate in are treated the same way. I like the Zoom Tres,. even if you break them in they still hold up. I believe the first step is admitting the problem. It's my vice, I don't drink, smoke, drugs, or anything worse. I'm ready to put these shoes up so I can break out the spring ones on deck. So, I'll be on the block soon in the Sheep or Niche looking to add to the closets.






I will be wearing these in LA later this month. Awaiting Spring.
